"Fugitives?"Hazen inquires slowly.
"From who?"He felt the question was redundant but he needed to confirm to himself.

Alex chuckled. "Who else?"
"The emperor." Rodric confirmed.
As they walked Akiva watched the path get narrower. "Err.... How much farther?" She asked shuffling away from the edge.
"Oh, a mile or so." One of the brothers said. It was hard to tell which one.

Hazen sighs it seems the more the thoughts brewed in his mind the more it drilled the point home. Deep down, the the very nature of human and inhuman beings he was a destructive force natures avatar taken human form, why had he been branded with the all consuming fire.
The thought sickened him, no matter how far he ran, what lifesyle he embraced, how far he separated himself from life he'd be this....this.....monster ready to devour anything and everything around him at a pindrop. Hazen liked to believe it was all thanks to the monks that had helped him quell the beast, but something deep inside laughed at this thought and gave just the slightest hint that what lie beneath simply slept.
His face gave this thoughts a appearance just for a momment before turning solid again.

"Why are we leaving so late, it's going to be dark soon..." She said. The light was fading from the sky which left the moon and stars to show them the path. Someone up ahead had lit a lantern, casting their long shadows against the cliff.
Izumi, up front set a faster pace. They all began to speed up. Once again, Akiva saw a curious look on Hazen's face. It troubled her.

Hazens eyes drifted for a momment before he realized Akiva was looking at him.
"Hmm? Is something troubling you Akiva?"He asks in a sympathetic tone.

She looked down at the path again. "I could ask you the same question." She said, embarrassed once again to be caught staring.

"Ah, I again have troubling memories darkening my mind, nothing to worry over though."Hazen says placing a hand on her shoulder.

"I can't help it." She sighed.
She touched the cliff wall, keeping to the side, feeling her way as well as looking on the ground.

When they reached the village, the ground became level at the bottom of a waterfall which powered a spinning watermill. The village was quiet and with scarcely any trees allowing them to view the starry canopy above them. They stayed near the outskirts of town, instead of traveling on toward the craft shops or further toward the small farms planted on the fertile soil nourished by the river that ran through their town. Izumi, the leader of their rebel group The Red Alchemist, began to walk toward the mill. Akiva felt more and more anxious as they were lead through the dark. Only one lantern hung outside the building and it cast partial light on the wooden edifice.
---
Meanwhile a lone soul traveled in silence to the Notables castle. He had entered the quiet farm town from a better known route than the rebels. As he moved past the servants quarters he handed his horse off to the stable boy and proceeded to the wrought iron door. Loud thuds echoed inside the castle.
An armed solder answered the door, but kept his gun at the ready as a young maid scurried off to fetch the Notable, master of the castle. A different maid lead him into a small study and bid him to wait for the master, then left the room. She leaned against the door nervously. Inside such a castle there were several hidden staircases and passages leading to the servants quarters, hidden because servants were to be neither seen nor heard yet if gave the same servants the ability to hear and see everything.
The visitors face was worn and weathered by age and distance. His dust covered coat had the symbol of the emperor on the shoulder, and his hat cast a shadow over his grey stubble. Such a look was reserved for the messengers that traveled between provinces. He sat in a large leather chair amid the book shelves and waited.

Grey ran as fast as she could, nearly running into walls trying to find her path to the Notable's bedchamber. THe castle was dark and still with most of the candles on the walls blown out. Finally aproached the his room. Quietly she opened the door and bowed.
"Sir, there is a man here to see you. He awaits in study." Grey said. "May I escort you?" The Notable crawled out of bed and said no to her request. "Sir, if you need anything more you only need to call." The Notable didn't say a word. He din't talk to his servants much. At least not Grey.
"Thank you m'lord." She said backing out of the room and fading from his sight.
Grey then continued her race, now headed for the maids chambers. At the nearest one there were many servants hidden away. They were still, but the quiet whirr of whispers filled the room. She found a place to sit and looked around for a familiar face.
"What's going on?" Grey whispered to a graying old woman.

"There's a messenger here..." The woman whispered. Someone lit a candle and hung it in one of the black metal holders. The corridor instantly became less ominous looking.
They all heard the door close as their master entered the study. "Why are you here?" He asked impatiently. No pleasantries or greetings were exchanged, most likely because he had come at such a late hour. A chair scraped across the floor.
"I came to inform you of the attack on the neighboring province, a village under the leadership of Sir Lein." The visitor said in a low gravely voice. "And also to inform-"
"I don't know anything about it, this really isn't worth calling in the middle of the night." He complained, crabbily.
A soft sigh could be heard. "Sir, with all due respect, please remain silent until I finish explaining..."
"I will not be talked to in such a manner! I-" There was a loud thud as something crashed to the ground.
"You know treason is a crime punishable by death." He growled.
"I... I don't know what your talking about..." their master stammered.
"You are providing rebels with a haven in your village, they pay you a heft sum every month to keep you from turning them in. Isn't that right?"
Such blackmail had never before been heard by even the stealthiest of the servants.
"You... you don't understand..." their master choked, sounding more terrified by the second. "They protect the village... the're... the're are beasts lurking in the caves-"
"I don't have time for your stupid legends. The Emperor has asked me to gather all the women in your village under the age of 20, he wishes to use them as slaves." He said calmly. Everyone knew the fate of the slaves. They worked in mines or in the castle of the Emperor, were never seen or heard from again by their friends and family. It didn't make any sense why he wanted only women.
"Wha... why?"
"Do not question the orders of your Emperor." He hissed, a loud smack reverberated off the stacked bookshelves. "Tomorrow morning, men from the Imperial Army will appear in your village, do not be alarmed. Tell no one or you will die and so will your wife and children." Feet paced across the floor.

The old woman put a hand on Grey's shoulder hearing the conversation between the two.
But Grey didn't feel it. Her blood ran ice cold at the thought of leaving and she felt numb.
"Go find your mother dear." The lady whispered. A tear an down her cheeck and she nodded. She took in one last look of her old friend and ran away.
With tears streaming down her face, Grey rushed into every maids chamber of the castle. Almost unironically, the last one she had checked was where her mother was.
"Mom! She whispered. "Mom, have you heard whats going on!"
"No, Grey honey, what's so wrong?"
Her body shook with sobs."The notable has blackmailed rebels, but that's not the point." Grey paused and wiped away tears. "Mom, the emperor is going to take every girl under the age of twenty and use them as slaves!"
Her mother held her in her arms like she was a child again.
"Oh baby, I'm sorry, but maybe this is fate. I really don't want you to go, but I know I can't do anything."
Grey began to wail.
"Grey, the only thing I can do to protect you now is tell you a secret I've kept for too long."
